Travel Homeworking FAQ: Everything You Need to Know to Start Your Own Travel Business From Home
If you’ve been thinking about starting a travel homeworking career, you’re in the right place. Becoming an Independent Travel Consultant offers a flexible, rewarding way to build your own business from home — with full support, industry training, reputable suppliers, and the reassurance that comes from being part of the Jamie Wake Travel Group.
Whether you want to work part-time around your family or build a full-time career in travel, homeworking gives you the freedom to choose your hours, grow your own client base, and earn an income doing something genuinely enjoyable. And unlike franchise-style models or multi-level marketing schemes, our approach is simple, transparent, and designed to set you up for long-term success.
This page brings together the most common questions we’re asked about becoming a travel homeworker, with clear, honest answers to help you decide whether this is the right path for you.
Are customers financially protected?
Yes — and this is one of our biggest strengths.
Through our partnership with Jamie Wake Travel, you’ll have access to:
- ATOL protection (where applicable)
- PTS Trust Account
- Supplier Failure Insurance / Airline Failure Insurance
Every booking has a suitable level of cover.
Even if you’re new to the industry, we teach you exactly how each protection type works so you can confidently support your clients.
Who holds client money?
Client funds are securely held in the PTS Trust Account, ensuring full financial transparency and safety.
You never handle money directly, and refunds follow supplier terms with our support.
Are there any joining or setup fees?
No.
There are no setup or joining fees, making us one of the most accessible ways to start a travel homeworking business.
What are the monthly costs?
We keep fees simple:
- £50 monthly service fee
No hidden charges, no surprise fees — ever.
What is the contract length, and how do I leave?
We aim to maintain a transparent and mutually respectful relationship with all our homeworkers.
The minimum term is 6 months, and you can leave with three months’ written notice.
The requirement for homeworkers to give three months' notice is not just about protecting the business—it’s also designed to support the homeworker. This period ensures:
- 🧾 Commission Continuity: You continue to receive commission on upcoming bookings that are paid, ticketed, or depart within your notice period. This helps avoid the financial disruption of a sudden departure and ensures you are fairly rewarded for work already done.
- Client Care & Professional Legacy: You have time to complete client handovers professionally, ensuring your clients are supported even after you leave. This protects your reputation and relationships.
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance: As part of a business protected by PTS and ATOL, the three-month window helps ensure we can comply with all financial and consumer protection laws, reducing the risk of complications with client payments or supplier terms.
- Flexibility & Support: During the notice period, we continue to offer support, access to systems, and marketing where appropriate: enabling a smooth transition rather than a sudden stop.
In short, the notice period is a buffer that protects your income, your clients, and your professional reputation while also giving us time to adjust resources.

How and when are commissions paid?
Commissions are paid around the 10th of each month, after:
- You submit your Commission Claim
- The client has travelled OR
- The supplier/ATOL holder has been paid
It’s reliable, transparent, and easy to track.
What can I realistically earn?
Your earnings grow as your client base grows.
Most consultants build up gradually with repeat customers, referrals and niche marketing.
We don’t promise income levels — but we do give you the tools to succeed long-term.
How many hours do I need to commit?
Most consultants begin with 10–20 hours per week, increasing as enquiries grow.
Consistency matters more than the number of hours you work.
Can I start part-time?
Yes — the model is designed to be flexible.
Many consultants start alongside their job or caring responsibilities.
When can I start booking?
As soon as you’ve completed induction training and feel confident using the systems — often within a few weeks.
Are you linked to any MLM scheme?
Absolutely not.

Can I choose a niche?
Absolutely.
Niches like cruise, family travel, luxury, weddings, honeymoons, LGBTQ+ travel, and large families can be highly profitable.
We help you position yourself effectively.
Are there restrictions on what I can book or who I can book for?

You can work with overseas customers, but remember:
- ATOL protection applies only to UK travellers
